Thriving!
I bought this plant in November 2022, and as of June 2023, it's still thriving! I had one issue with brown tips of the leaves, did a little research, and realized I was underwatering it. Now I use a moisture meter to check the soil 2 inches below the surface. When it's dry, I give it 4 cups of water. That seems to have solved the issue for me. New stems and leaves are coming up, and the plant looks very happy! I like it so much I'm about to order a second one!

Featured Questions
Why is "aeration" so critical specifically for Cast Iron Plants?
Unlike many houseplants with stringy roots, the Cast Iron Plant grows from thick, fleshy rhizomes (underground stems). These rhizomes act like storage tanks. If they are buried in dense, wet soil without the air pockets provided by lava rocks, they effectively "suffocate" and turn to mush. Lava rocks provide the structural "breathing room" these heavy rhizomes need to expand.
How big does Cast Iron grow?
Cast Iron typically reaches a moderate size when grown indoors, usually between 2 to 4 feet tall. However, size can vary depending on the amount of light, the size of the pot, and the plant's overall care. In ideal conditions, some may grow taller or wider. Regular pruning and repotting can help manage size and encourage healthy growth.
How often should I water my Cast Iron Plant?
Cast Iron plants should be watered when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. This usually means watering every 1–2 weeks depending on the environment. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf drop or browning. It's best to use your finger to check soil moisture and adjust frequency based on the season and humidity.
What kind of light does Cast Iron plant need?
Cast Iron plants are incredibly tolerant of low light. That said, your Cast Iron Plant will grow best with medium to bright indirect light. Avoid too much light as this will cause leaves to brown or fade.
